Kiikala Municipality

Kiikala municipality is one of the twelve municipalities in Salo area which is in Varsinais-Suomi region in the south west of Finland, one of the regions in the Western Administrative District. Kiikala municipality was founded in 1869. The municipality is by the E18 highway, 100 km from Helsinki, 85 km from Turku and 30 km from Salo. The total area of Kiikala municipality is 245,26 sqkm. The total coastline is 50 km. The nature in Kiikala is extremely diversified. Among the cornfields there is an esker ridge moulded during the Glacial Period. This area with its countless rivers, ditches and lakes, swamps and moorlands forms an unique entity in the nature of the southern Finland. Real pearls among these are, a conserved site Hyyppäräharju (ridge), the highest point in Varsinais-Suomi, Särämäki, Kultalähde (the Golden Pond) ravine and Omenajärvi (The Apple Lake), which many migrating birds favour.
Other sights to view are the Kiikala Aviation Centre which mainly focuses on glider flying and small airplanes and the Kiikala Arts and Crafts Museum on the Museumhill in the village.
The roots of industrial production dates back to the year 1813 when the glassworks in Johannislund started to make use of the generous quartzsand supply of the county. This tradition still continues as Optiroc Ltd produces sandtiles and sandfiller. There are quite a few metall firms and also a laundry specializing on leather clothes and garments in the municipality.

Population

There are about 1900 inhabitants in Kiikala. For one third of people living in Kiikala the source of livelyhood is industry and construction, for one third service trade and for one third agriculture. The population is divided in age groups as follows: 0-14 years 16%, 15-64 years 62% and over 65 years 22% of the population. Inhabitants work in Kiikala but particularly in Salo and even in Helsinki.


Economic life

The income tax rate is 18,00p. The local tax income/inhabitant was 1 850 e in 2003. The real estate tax rate was 0,50 % in general, 0,22% for those who have a permanent home and 0,82% for the others. Municipality loan is 2 e /inhabitant


Living

There are large, nice and and profitable one-family house building sites in the village, in Härjänvatsa area and in Kruusila by E 18 highway. It is also possible to rent an apartments and single-family houses. There are some free industrial estates for different purposes for sale in the county.
